Overview of Projects

The Forum for Collaborative HIV Research is an independent public/private partnership including government agencies, the pharmaceutical industry, HIV researchers and clinicians, and the HIV patient advocacy community. Our mission is to enhance and facilitate HIV research.

The Forum's key functions are to:

  • Assess current knowledge, practice patterns, ongoing studies and information in all areas affecting HIV disease including the basic, clinical and social sciences, public health and health services research;
  • Identify gaps in the current HIV/AIDS knowledge base in any of these areas, which, if filled, would answer critical questions
  • Provide mechanisms for experts from the Forum constituencies to meet, discuss, and synthesize information relevant to the issue
  • Recommend steps that will fill the identified gaps
  • Catalyze appropriate stakeholders to act on the recommendations.
  • Facilitate the development of a strategy and propose new mechanisms to conduct the needed studies, should existing sources prove inadequate to do so.

The Forum is housed in the Department of Prevention and Community Health, School of Public Health and Health Services, The George Washington University, Washington, DC.

Forum Areas of Activity:

Initially, the Forum’s focus centered on issues related to treatment strategies, adherence and treatment guidelines. The Forum has since broadened its scope to include treatment- related toxicities, immune-based therapies, health services research and co-infections. Most recently, the Forum has initiated a series of projects related to global HIV/AIDS, including the transfer of diagnostic and monitoring technologies to resource poor settings and facilitating collaboration and cooperation among training programs in Africa. Project themes and reports for past activities are listed under Publications. For more information on current projects [Click Here].

The outcomes of the Forum meetings include the initiation of new research programs, establishment of collaborative projects, a more in depth look into issues raised by the appropriate agencies and various research related activities.
