Consultation on the Inclusion of Adolescents in HIV Biomedical Prevention Clinical Trials |

In collaboration with Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child
Health and Human Development, the National Institute of Mental Health, National
Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases,
and the Office of AIDS Research. This consultation will focus on examining and
discussing the desirability and timing of as well as barriers to enrollment of
adolescents in these trials. Participants will include representatives
from academia, industry, HIV-affected communities, and various branches of the United States
government. These participants will offer an expanse of expertise
covering the medical, behavioral, ethical, legal and regulatory ramifications
of including or not including adolescents in biomedical prevention trials.

In fall 2008, the Forum for Collaborative HIV Research, in collaboration with Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH), conducted a study to examine the practices associated with pregnancy management and contraceptive care that are occurring in clinical trials for ongoing and planned phase II and III clinical microbicide and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) trials.

The Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Trials Working
Group was established in September 2008 with funding from the Bill and Melinda
Gates Foundation under the aegis of the Forum for Collaborative HIV
research. Its establishment followed
discussions held by various PrEP trial investigators concerning the need and
desire for a neutral forum in which PrEP trial investigators and sponsors could
convene for the purpose of sharing information, coordinating current and future
research activities, plan for dissemination of trial results, and
collaboratively discussing implications of trial results for future HIV
prevention research and programmatic activities.
