Background

Women and girls are disproportionally vulnerable to HIV infection. Although biologic factors explain this in part, social and economic disparities, coercion, and violence are significant contributors to the increased likelihood of infection. These factors also influence availability of and access to care and treatment after infection. This symposium will focus on three research themes specific to women and HIV - use of antiretrovirals for prevention of infection, addressing social problems putting women at risk, and specific needs for women in conflict and post-conflict settings. These will be discussed from the research and the community perspective, highlighting what the needs are, what is being done, and what needs to be done in the biomedical, behavioral, and socio-cultural disciplines. A panel discussion featuring leaders from funding organizations and advocacy groups will follow the presentations.
