Quality of HIV Care – Closing the Gap
Background:Recent data suggest that the clinical outcome for HIV-infected patients in regular medical care is better among those whose medical provider is highly “HIV experienced”. Processes for certification of medical providers as “HIV specialists” have been proposed. However, patients in areas of low HIV prevalence or other underserved areas may have access only to “low volume” providers. Objectives:In collaboration with HRSA, the Forum will convene a workshop to address the supports that can be provided to close the “quality gap” between high volume and low/mid volume providers. The participants of this workshop will consider what criteria describe quality care, the impact of certification for low-prevalence and other underserved areas and possible support systems for low and mid-volume HIV medical providers. Status:The planning committee for this project has met on August 15, 2002. The workshop was held on December 10 and 11, 2002. Scientific chairs: Project Specific Sponsors:
